another solution
buy a wireless router, and one wireless adapter.
one computer can be directly connected to the router, this computer must have a network card.

the other computer can use the wireless adapter, a USB one also can do.

thats all you need ! neat and sweet without any long cables.

setting up wise its simple, refer to the instruction on the manual of the router.

Be careful using a cabled router. Wireless might be better. However, if you're stuck with cables, for the time being, try using a five port switch instead. That way, you don't have to deal with a full blown operating system and command line jargin when it goes offline.

I dont' recommend anything that says "hub" on it. Hubs are a pain in the rear, because they have no capacity for controlling traffic on your network.

2 pcs, 2 network cards, a router and 50 feet of rj45 cat 5 cable.
and if you read the manual u get with the router, this will help.
