You are describing the Southeastern Lubber grasshopper. The colors you report are typical of some southern populations. They are not capable of flight. Thees grasshoppers are extremely numerous in many parts of the Southeastern states this year.

We have them in Florida also. Called a Lubber or Lugar or whatever, they are black and yellow and cause a lot of damage to crops and flowers.

Call you local extension service for details on hoow to control them is they are a problem in your area
