IMs are instantaneous, and get sent if the recipient is connected at the time, and they are temporary.

Email is sent to an inbox whether the recipient is connected or not and can be read, forwarded, replied to and retrieved at any time. they are not deleted until the reader chooses to delete them, and they are sent through an exchange server that can usually check for SPAM and viruses before being received. Emails also rarely have a character limit and are put together more like a letter, than just a chat type of message.

well if you talking about instant messaging eg via msn/yahoo etc
these are instant messages, so both people would need to be at the pc online
and for email is if they are not at the pc, but would need to login into the mailbox. read email and reply. which maybe not recived instant on the other side eg the other persons mailbox.

i believe instant messaging is something like e-chat.You can send and recieve messages at almost the same time.wheras in the case of email, the other end user's reply won't reach you instantly.Instant messaging would be faster when compared to email

instant messaging are stuff like MSN, yahoo messanger, ICQ... etc

email are stuff like hotmail, yahoo mail , etc

instant messaging 2 or more parties are connected to each other in real time through the chat server. hence any messages sent are near instant.

whereas in email, even though the mails are also nearly instant, but receipients in the mails are NOT connected to each other in real time. so the mails go through a server then to their mailbox.
