I believe that ancient Egypt was poly-religious. There were several separate believe systems. Maybe they became syncretic over time

There is a lingering remnant of mother earth - father sky worship, except that the roles of the goddess Nut and the god Geb are reversed. Nut and Geb are analogous to Freyer-Freya of the Goths, Demeter-Apollo of the Hellens, Yoni-Ling of the Hindus, Yin-Yang of the Chinese. This is probably the earliest system of religion.

They have aspects a planetary system of religion that is derivative of Sabeanizm from Arabia. But maybe they were just interested in the astronomy aspect of Sabeanizm and it just apears like a religion rather than a science.

Also they seem to have ancestor worship based on the eight survivors of the world flood known as the octad or ogdad or octet. These are the same eight mentioned in the Bible, but given different names. In this system I believe that Ptah should be equated with Japheth/Jupiter/Prajapati.

The belief system of Isis-Horus-Osiris is clearly derivative of the Sumerian system of Tiamat-Dumuz-Ea.

So I think that there were multiple origins over long stretches of time.

Are you a mason?

The egyptians had different religions at diferent times. But their most influential one was worshiping the sun God Ra, They were the first to use the golden ratio in the pyramid chambers, the ratio that many great buildings have in their design. They designed the first city that was orientated towards the suns movement, Other citys have since followed: Paris Washington and London are the most obvious but few realise it!

If you want a lot of detailed info in easy-to-digest form, check out historychannel.com, or watch some of the great shows they have on Egypt. I'd especially recommend anything including Dr. Hawass, who is the head of antiquities for Egypt.
