It is legal because people like it and enjoy the euphoria of it. We tried before to stop it but only caused greater problems and brought great fortunes to the ones who smuggled it in. The same is likely with marijuana. Many people enjoy it and while it seems less dangerous than alcohol, it is illegal and we now enjoy a very busy trade with Mexico in the illegal substance. At least alcohol is taxed but smuggled drugs are not...should marijuana then be legalized and taxable?

It's just like aspirin; alcohol was around long before the Food and Drug Administration came into being. Lots of people have reactions to aspirin and children will DIE if you give it to them during certain childhood illnesses. If it were to be "invented" today, aspirin would not be an "over the counter" drug.

It's important to keep in mind that alcohol is a substance that can be abused if taken beyond the body's normal ability to absorb it. Typically 1 in 10 people are alcoholics and end up abusing it. The majority of people are able to just have a few drinks and stop. Others aren't able to stop drinking and that of course leads to legal problems. Thanks

Not only is alcohol a major part of the worldwide economy, it is part of humanity as a whole. To prohibit its use would literally destroy thousands of cultural traditions and change the scope of mankinds sensibilities. Making it illiegal in any sense would be impossible.
By the way, it's not alcohol that causes the problem...it's the individual who allows the alcohol to control the situation that is at fault.

Money. It has a clear distribution system, built in consumers, and has developed plenty of political clout. We outlawed it during prohibition and it cost more money to prohibit it than it did to license it.
If the Marijuana supporters wanted legalization they would check the history of prohibition and the re-institution of alcohol. The Government wants regulation and taxes. Show them both and you are home free.

Because it was realized that it's better to let the
public make it's own decision rather than fuel a dangerous underground black market.
We are no longer as advanced in our thinking when it comes to how we
handle today's drug situation.

Because the alcohol companies pump too much money into the government's pockets for it to be made illegal. And because, the country tried making it illegal once and it was a big bust. Just led to even more crime.

America tried prohibition and the racketeers made all the money. If you try to take away alcohol cigarettes and sex, what else are you going to sedate the masses with.

If smoking kills you why do people smoke? Its one of those questions. Its only bad when you consume alot. Same with drugs its bad when you take more than you should. And besides it brings alot of money to the economy just like cigarettes do.

It's legal because the liquor companies, bars and restaurants make money off of it. Additionally, most of the state legislators drink so they are hardly likely to ban it especially when you consider the money they get from the liquor lobby.
