The weaker fliers are on the longer side of the v so they have less wind resistance when flying. Right? Canada geese live in my lake. I sure wish the would migrate, but they stay here all winter, too lazy to fly down to the Chesapeake.

So on long 'flights' they fly in a 'v', so all except the first one can ride on a kind in 'cushion', and not have to fly as hard. And they switch out so the one on front isn't always the one on front, as for one side being longer than the other, they don't fly like that for too long.

because they are hoping that the hunter will shoot for the shorter side.. because hopefully he doesnt like to eat geese.. and just wants to get as few as possible

They fly-in where they can and depending on the direction it a better view :) also it makes the turning easier.
