A lot of times this depends on where the thermostat is located with respect to the heater. Setting the furnace to 76 really just means 76 at one point in a given room where the thermostat is. So your furnace will output whatever it takes to make that one point 76 degrees, even if that means other places in the house are much hotter than that.
