You need to find people who really "ride" and not a bunch of weekend woosies. Anyone with a license and $20k can own a Harley, but that doesn't make you a rider/biker. I ride in the foothills of Colorado with a girl who just bought her first road bike, a 600cc Honda, and the shortest ride that we've gone on so far, was 125 miles. Sound like she's more of a rider than your friends! I ride a Harley, and when I stop it's for gas, and that's only after 150+ miles. Find people who can ride, and leave the woosies behind!

It doesn't matter what brand of motorcycle it is, although Harley Davidson owners probably do top the list of wanna be cool. They want people to see that they are cool, that they have an HD. Alot of the people that own metric cruiser can't afford an HD, but they really like to ride not just show off. This is why I usually ride alone. I have an old 1982 Shovelhead. I take the open road without the bars, without the stop lights and I can do a good 130 miles before I have to stop for fuel and I can't remember the last time I had to stop for a repair. To sum it up. Like yourself and I there are true bikers who just love to ride and then you have the wanna be cool bikers. I own a Motorcycle Transport company. http://www.idtransport.com When people call to have a bike shipped and they tell me the bike is just a 100 miles away from them. I say that sounds like a joy ride to me why would you want to pay someone else to move. Ride on!

Trust me, it's not just harleys! I have a sport bike and (try to) ride with a group of sportbike people in my area, and guaranteed, every time we ride for 10-15 minutes, they end up stopping for at least a half an hour, EVERY time. It drives me crazy!
We sit around the gas station, then move to another gas station, then sit in some parking lot, then go to some other gas station....ARRRGH. Now I don't really ride with them any more, since it ends up being such a waste of time. And they have all taken it so personally...trust me, there are riders with all kinds of bikes who would rather sit around and look cool than actually /ride/.
But they'll yell at you until they're blue in the face insisting that they aren't that type of rider!

What some cheese with that whine??? If stopping is a problem for you then get on your bike and ride by yourself! I ride with a group too, but sometimes they do stop off quite a bit. i call it " Bar Hopping" So as not to be the one to always complain, I usually will take a ride(long ride) by myself. No one to answer to, you can change the direction you are going in at anytime, stop when you feel like it or just keep going, That's what i call riding!!!!! As far as having to work on the bikes.....can't ever say I've experienced that!!!!, and hope I don't!!!!!

maybe your bum nerve endings are dead or not working well enough, to what i know, harleys vibrate like hell, when the harley stops next to us(other make riders) we could feel the vibrations from the harley, in fact the we could see the harley engine vibrating with our naked eye. also the harley throttle is hard to twist, so after 20 minutes as you said, those guys bums were numb, their wrists tired, and fingers numb as well due to harley poor brakes you need to really squeeze them to slow down.
Thats why they made it a "cool" excuse to stop every 20 minutes or so. If you wanna enjoy the ride and be bothered to stop every now and then, dump the harley, dump your harley pals, get a japanese or even italian cruiser, join another group of japanese/italian make bikes and you would not regret it. You have to admit it, harleys are only good in the "looks and stlye" section but lack out in the riding/safety/comfort section.
I used to ride Suzukis,Kawazakis, then switched to Yamaha's, never looked back since.
Chill out!

I beleve there are several factors here:
1--Most models of Harley's except the full fledged cruisers, aren't the most comfortable (you know that loud rumble--it causes some serious vibrations). Some models have a deliberately "rigid" suspension---ouch!
2--Many Harley riders are known to do all of their own mechanical work and being that most aren't professional mechanics--adjustments need to be made
3--What good is all the loud noise and cool duds if no one gets to hear and see it?
4--How would all of the ladies that need rides hook up with the Harley peeps if they don't stop and check?
My 2 cents...

Was it your Harley that kept messing up. It's probably that bike. Harley's are great bikes and well worth the ride. They should have had their bikes fixed before going on the ride. When we go for rides we just go. You should use the restroom and fill up before setting of to your destination (if any in mind) and then just ride. Harley's have alot of upkeep but are worth it as long as you take care of your bike like it NEEDS to be taken care of.
Hope you have a better ride next time b/c there's no other ride like it.

Wow! That's AMAZING! Seven Harley-Davidsons, and they all managed to stay running for at least 20 minutes! That must be some kind of record! Did you have the usual guy with the pickup and the trailer following you on this expedition?
If you want to look cool, wear lots of black leather, little beenie helmets and sit at a bar all day polishing your chrome, buy a Harley-Davidson.
If you want to put miles on your bike, buy a BMW!

You answered your own question. Harley's are not a well engineered bike for taking serious rides. Plain and simple. They never claimed to be and they aren't marketed that way. They are an icon and a status symbol. Serious motorcycle enthusiasts who RIDE motorcycles know this. Nobody buys a Harley for its comfort and reliability! They buy it so people will look at them on it. Just like a sports car. You can't really go 200 MPH legally in it so why own one? Because you want people to notice you and see you driving it.

Start a serious riders only club.
My dad had the same problem with his club. Took a break at nearly every town they came in, spent 3 hours every morning getting ready for the day's ride... He wanted the company of other riders but didn't like all the putting around.
