The people of Canada and Mexico don't get upset...this is an internally fabricated gripe.
American is the abbreviated name for United States of Americans and not necessarily a self-given name.
People all over the world abbreviate USA Citizens as this.
...Just as people all over the world abbreviate United States of Mexico citizens as Mexicans..
...actually they would also be able to claim the title of United Statesians
The "USA is arrogant to call themselves Americans" controversy is a nonsensical inspiration of USA bashers

because anyone living from canada to chile is an "american." i think most of it has to do with the arrogance that some americans display while traveling or speaking with people visiting our country. it's not a bad thing to call yourself an american - i do it. what i have seen bother people is the attitude given off by citizens of the united states that they are better than the rest of the world and all of the people in it when in today's world you really need to look at the people not as much of the rest of the crap.
now someone is going to say i'm not patriotic, when i do believe this is the best place in the world to live. but americans need to face that fact that, that belief is an opinion.

Because the US"A" has the word "America" in it. And why are they upset that we call ourselves Americans? They want to be called Americans but we can't? Either way they arn't Americans as the entire world knows who Americans are and Americans live in the USA. Plus to be specific, it's North Americans and South Americans not "Americans" by itself.

Geographically speaking we are all "Americans", from Tierra Del Fuego in South America to The Tundra Territories of Canada. The term "Americans" is just an abbreviation for the United States of America. Maybe they would be happier if we were "Unitedians" or maybe "Stateians". I think "Americans" will be the choice of all.

I didn't know they got upset about it. Did you know in South America they call themselves Americans? I don't see why they would get upset. It's part of our country. We aren't just called the United States...we're called the United States of America. I don't think Canada or Mexico's official title has America in it. Mexico is called Estados Unidos Mexicanos or The United Mexican States and Canada is just called Canada

I don't know that they do....at least not in any great numbers. The nationalities of North America are Canadian, American and Mexican (Native Americans notwithstanding). Why anyone, other than a Native American, would have a problem with this is beyond me.

Um, we are the United States of America. Therefore we are Americans. They shouldn't get their panties in such a twist over stuff like that. People get upset over the strangest things...

When a Mexican wants to be thought of as a Mexican he calls himself a Mexican. When a Canadian wants you to know he's NOT from the U. S. he calls himself a Canadian. I have never ever heard them call themselves Americans unless it's to say they're angry about us calling ourselves Americans. OR unless they've come to AMERICA and want to be thought of as an AMERICAN CITIZEN.... in which case I say welcome to AMERICA! Just don't march against us until you pass the citizenship exam!
