They don't. According to the Bible: "His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; In that very day his thoughts perish." Psalm 146:4
Also, "...the living know they will die; but the dead do not know anything...." Ecclesiastes 9:5. This book in chapter 12, verse 7 says: "...then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it."
Lastly, Jesus Himself made this issue plain: "He (Jesus) said to them, 'Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awaken him out of sleep.' The disciples therefore said to Him 'Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.' Now Jesus had spoken of his death; but they thought that He was speaking of literal sleep. Then Jesus said to them plainly, 'Lazarus is dead...' "
John 11
This teaching of the dead resting in their graves until a future resurrection is not commonly taught, even in Christian circles, but it is biblical.
If you're not a Bible believer, why not check it out for yourself? I truly believe it tells us all the truth we need to know. There's more relevance to science, social concerns and current, as well as future events, than most people realize. Many versions and translations are available, to make it easier to get into the Bible and understand it.
As for manifestations that appear to be dead people, those are other spirits that we want to avoid. Message me through e-mail or 360 anytime. Blessings. Buttercup
