i've always heard that you have to wash dishes, but wouldn't you just be taking the person's job that already works there?

Depending on the circumstances, I'm sure they would wait until you made a phone call to somebody who could help you out with some cash or something.
Thing is there are so many con artists out there today, so when something like this does actually happen you can't really tell if you are being conned, sometimes getting the police involved can help decide that, especially if the people just don't seem to care and might be trying to get a free meal.
I remember a couple who came into the restaurant I work at a week before Mothers Day and conned one of the foreign servers into serving them a free steak, and then made up a story to get the other steak for free. It took awhile to be resolved, but they did end up getting their meal for free. My manager told them they were'nt welcome back. They left home with enough money for a meal under $10.00 and didn't even think about a gratuity. My manager let them know how rude they had been and how they might want to think about how they treat people in the future. I'm certain we won't see them back anytime soon, THANK GOD!

It depends on the restaurant. And even more so on the person working that night.

Some may choose to let it slide this once?
Or, Make you leave something like your ID or Jacket for collateral until $$$ is paid?
Or, Abducted by Aliens ( I was wondering how that happened )?
Or Dishes, Mop Closet, Toilets, Grills, Grease & Grime...
Or you will end up on the next episode of "COPS"

Any number of things might happen!

It depends on the restaurant manager, owner, employee, and policies. Most of the time if it is under $100 and you are able to go get the money they will hold your drivers license and let you go get it and give you your license back when you give them the money. I was at a restaurant once that I thought took VISA. I only pay with my Visa Debit Card. I found out they only took cash, they held my license while I hit the ATM!

There may be exceptions, but most restaurants will call the police and have you arrested if you are unable to pay your bill. It is the equivalent of stealing.
