I am interested in getting my daughter into modeling and acting. She is very young, and many think she's extremely photogenic. I'd like to do advertising and such with her.

DO YOUR RESEARCH. The one thing that will serve you and your daughter the best is your knowledge of the industry and your ability to apply that knowledge in a way that benefits your daughter. It is an extremely cut throat industry and even advice from fellow aspiring star parents should be looked upon with a weary eye.

It can also be very rewarding, especially if the child truly enjoys the work. How do you know that she will? Approach local businesses and offer for your daughter to do some of their print, local tv, and radio ads for free. Collect these and keep a portfolio so that you and your daughter can mark her progress and plot your course. Show her her work and always, always, always encourage and never berate. Invest in singing, dancing and modeling lessons. Consider acting camps. If this sounds costly, go to your local college performing arts department and interview students for an arts tutor position. It'll improve their skills (having to teach something makes you have to know your stuff) and put a couple of dollars in the students hands. Take her to performances. Arrange, in advance, to tour the backstage area. If you can't get in for a "private" tour, find a couple more kids and call it an acting club or performance group. Performers often will open up to children because they remember that one person that opened up to them.

Sounds like a lot? You haven't even begun! The important thing is laying a solid foundation. Not just for her skills and career, but also for your relationship and your skills. After all, you don't want to be that hollywood dad that gets sued on his baby's 18th birthday!

There's so much more. If you like, you can email me.

Let her have a normal childhood first. My husband and I have actually turned down legitimate offers to put our children in movies and modeling. Look at that industry and see how many of them that started out when they were children. Now see how many of them had MAJOR problems. See how many of them couldn't go to the park and had stalkers by the time they were 10. Not worth it. When she is closer to an adult and SHE wants to do that, then by all means be the supportive father, but for now, let her enjoy being a kid.

Apply with major agencies in New York or Hollywood. And don't believe anyone that says you have to pay $ to get started! The only thing you may have to spend a little money on is a good head shot and nice clothes to go to agencies and auditions in.
