Lemonade Lucy. She refused to serve alcohol at any White House function, and often served lemonade instead.

I'm not an expert on Hayes' wife, but if you want to know which woman really ran the white house it would have to be Mrs. Wilson after Woodrow had a stroke. She was the only one that could supposedly "communicate" with him because he was incoherent to everyone else. She ran the executive branch as no other woman has.

Of course the next election might change things -
Rice vs. Clinton what a cat fight that would be. One can only hope.

Lemonade Lucy, and she was just fine by anyone that visited, as long as they didn't want alcohol. No less popular than any other First Lady.
