They want to check how responsible you are. Banks especially do this, they want to see how you handle your money and expenses.
I have been told that if you are denied a job because of a credit report it is considered discriminatory and you could file a complaint/lawsuit against them. You may want to check with your local Labor Dept

because this info is easy and cheap to get and they think someone who cannot manage his own money is less able than someone who can.
