my friend has a master's, but he got smaller job offer's with the BS

You would need a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry for certain.
To do more extensive research I would say go for the MS (Master of Science) in Chemistry.

A PhD would get you into a good University where you can do research with grants., etc. You would probably have a faculty position which means publishing the results of your work.
