The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. I have read thousands of books in my life and have over a thousand in my personal library, and this is my favorite book. It's a semiautobiographical novel about a little boy in South Africa who comes of age as World War II and then apartheid takes hold of his country. If you like fantasy, I would recommend Elantris by Brandon Sanderson. It's a true rarity--a single standalone fantasy novel that still feels epic. It has politics, intrigue, religious zealotry, and war all tied up into a sweeping love story. I also had the opportunity to meet the author and he was really funny and very interesting to talk to.
Happy reading!

Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett. Occassionally philosophical while all the while funny. The book does a great job of poking fun at modern society in a unique way.
