I haven't had much experience in anything. I'm only 18 so the only thing I've pretty much done is fast food and child care. I have been filling out applications lately for different receptionist positions and most places say I need experience or a resume. I don't have either. What should I do??

You do have a resume if you have worked anywhere before! It's just a list of your education and the job experience you HAVE had. I'm sure you could find info on how to put one together, or ask someone who may know how. You can always start out and work your way up later if things work out for you at a particular job. Then you will have more experience in one thing.

Good place to search for ads are all colleges in your city. They always have postings for students. Those companies don't expect much experience, will work with your school schedule
.
Also go to Library and get some books on how to write a good resume. Look for the books with sample resumes includedThey even have samples of resumes of people who don't have any experience.Check also websites.Type in "sample resumes" in search engine and check those too the same way like library books.
The way I did it was to go through the sample resumes ONLY and when I found an interesting words and sentences that I liked and thought they describe my experience I changed them to adjust to my situation. Trust me, now I have a great resume (I was told that by a Recruter!) but I don't need it anymore because I got a great job!

Good Luck

it's the sad truth. you can't get a "good" job unless you know someone or your good at something that would allow you to have a good job. The only way to get to the "top" ( or atleast the middle:) ) is to start at the bottom.
my advice to you is to search around for a good company. do some research on a company, learn the history, how they treat the employees. then go apply for the position they have open. they will teach you if they are interested and you will learn experience from that. but you might have to make a few pots of coffee to start.
just don't get discouraged. it takes time to gather experience. you are young. you have lots of time. i always say " take all the time you want.... it's free"

Well, you do need a resume. Try the functional format since you do not have that much experience to emphasize your skills. However, you could probably use the reverse chronological format for a resume since you are only 18..and most companies would not expect that much experience. Try this site for tips. http://jobstar.org/tools/resume/index.php

Also, if you need experience..try going to your library and looking for volunteer opportunities...I am sure they would have a catalog of local volunteer positions such as an office assistant for experience. Mine does. They are usually volunteer positions for the county or city and are part-time..so if you find a job you can quit or fit it in your schedule. They would also have useful resume writing books as well.

Also, try http://www.volunteermatch.org/ for other local opportunities.

Good luck!

Do you have any office skills? Emphasize them in your resume. Add any and all work experience you have had, even if it's not secretarial. Resumes are pretty easy to write; if you need help, though, you can download a program online that will do it for you. All you have to do is fill in the info.

look up "easy resume creator pro"

Good luck!

Yes but it will be low-level jobs like a receptionist or sales. Keep trying someone will hire you. Some places want fresh meat so they can train them they way they want them to work. I would keep applying for the receptionist jobs pretty soon one will open up and that is a good foot in the door for jobs like Adm Assistants which pay a little better.

There are alot of good places to apply. Wal-Mart is a great place to work for. They have an excellent training program and with a little effort you can advance to a managers position. fast. They also offer scholarships and offer part time work if you are going to college. Just make sure you fill out the application thouroughly!!

Since you are young, the best route is college. They have so many financial aides today, you can do something you want to do, and not have to do to just get by. If you are withuot a High School diploma, or GED then make that your first priority.

make a resume, it is not hard. you can get forms online and create one very quickly. i got lucky with my first law office position and then moved way up from there. you have to have a resume and put plenty of them out, you will eventually find someone who loves you and is willing to give you a chance an there you go, you are in the door.
