Columbus once land on the American Continent he not just though that the American Native people is Indian or he had land on India but he thinks he knows so. Because the America native appeared just like the Indian and the surrounding area.

Colombus found the "Americas" after he got lost on his way to India, that's why he named the Native American People Indians :o)

Well there is a few explanations.

First is the whole columbus thing that a few people have posted.

Second, was the jesuit missonarys refered to the 'natives in some of their writings to the king of england as "in deus" meaning close to god or in god, therefore leading us to be called indians.

third is we crossed the land bridge between siria and alaska meaning we migrated somewhere from siria or india, however this fact was later disputed due to archological finds predating this concept.

because columbus wanted to discover india but incidently discovered america and the native of india are called indians so it just be called.
