Actually, I believe the saying is "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." It's from Romeo and Juliet. The context is that Juliet is telling Romeo that his true nature is what defines him, not his name. To have a little more context, here is a slightly longer quote: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other word would smell as sweet."
