It's a hard topic, as the abortion, because you have the whole picture, there's people who can actually be cured or get to improve their lives, but there's the risk: the humanity never stops when they wanna control the things..if we can make a better human race, what will stop us?
no moral concept stopped the bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Genetic engineering is a tool. Just like other tools/technologies, like fire, the telephone, and atomic energy, it is not intrinsically right nor wrong. It is how we choose to use a tool, and our cultural sense of ethics/morals, that is right or wrong.
Is it dangerous? Nature has been experimenting with genetic engineering for billions of years, and yes sometimes with drastic consequences. But our experiments are like a pop-gun in comparison. How likely is it that we can come up with something more dangerous than nature? Not likely in my view.
Is genetic engineering (or any other technology) "playing god"? Only the gods can answer that, and so far they ain't sayin'.

Yes and No. On one side it could be very helpful to the human race, by creating humans with better immune systems, advanced skills and better overall capability. On the other hand it could be very dangerous and way to competitive with only the elite who would excell in life. The natural cycle of life would become non exsistant. Check out the movie "GADICA" staring Ethan Hawke or "Demoltion Man" starring Sylvester Stalone for the subject of genetic engineering.

Genetic engineering as a science is not right or wrong. It is a branch of a larger umbrella of scientific research. What could be right or wrong is "what" or "whom" is being genetically engineered, and for "what purpose".

It is a dangerous science to tamper with, but it's research is ineviitable and so it should be done in the public forum so as to ensure some form of responsibility.
Otherwise it will be done by unscrupulous individuals and groups without any control or ethical boundaries-
Additional question ---is there any international law in existence to prevent someone from doing these experiments on a freighter in the middle of the ocean?

Sort of a mixed bag, so let me hit on the good part first.
There are some familes that die in the late 30's from colon cancer from a defective gene that can be fixed from genetic engineering.
The are other uses that can change behavior.
Take your pick.
It is right depending on how you use it. So you want to use a nuclear power plant, or drop a hydrogen bomb on a city?
Sort of the same question.

Genetic engineering is going to keep happening. The benefits can be profound. But also disaster. When it comes to the food we eat, I say leave it alone. The only reason GMO's, in our food chain, are happening is profit to corporations like Monsanto. To all of you, please watch the documentary DVD," The Future of Food" by Deborah Koons Garcia. It is unbelieveable that the very food we eat has made the American public guinea pigs for profit for the past 10 years!

it is right because it can get more to the point. like using bacterial cultures in producing human insulin or stuff for vaccinations. this is beneficial. also in breeding crops - like trees are really difficult to be bred classically due to long life span. i would say that most of the bread crops that we have now are basically product of genetic engineering (artificial polyploidisation) only the term did not exist for that. so people who shun GMO produce should never touch any bread/pasta, etc in their lifetime, it they REALLY think GMO is bad for them. to the claims about it being harmful to wildlife - if only THE REAL AN MANY TIMES REPORTED threats of invasive alien species and weeds got half as much attention as POSSIBLE dangers of GMOs of doing the same (not speaking of the fact that the very same possible danger goes for classically bred crops as well.)

To a degree, yes. As it is we've probably already screwed up humans' natural evolution with all of our medical advances. I think genetic engineering should be used to cure diseases. I don't agree with it being used to 'create' a perfect child.
