I agree with him. When your playing a sport that teams only score 1 or even no goals, you pretty much have it won considering the fact that its like 90 something percent that a team that goals first will win or tie. Although im not saying its not possible because its happened.

When two great teams play against each other, as they are Spain and France, anything can happen. However, what usually happens is that the first team scoring focuses on defending and moving the ball (spending time), and they don't bet too much on scoring again. It's a low-score game, so this is something that first team that scored gets against them. They feel confidence with just one goal, most of the time, since it's all they need to win, and it's of some's consideration that going for too many goals is anti-ethical.
Notice that, when Spain scored, the Spaniard miedfielders went down to defend and keep on the lead; on the other hand, the French miedfielders, Ribery and Zidane, went up to attack.
Brazil and Argentina are an exception, as you may think, because their way of playing is different than the European teams. Brazillian and Argentine coaches plan to attack all the time because they know the many genuine strikers those teams can count on, but European coaches are generally more concervative and are pleased with just one goal difference, although many times their players are not like them (i.e. David Trezeguet, France).

It depends, if the team sit back and wait for the end they most likely will lose, since the other team will be giving their best against a "we won" attitude.
Now if the team goes on for more, it's hard to say. Using Brazil as an example, since winning 3-0 without genius moves is considered a failure back home, they always go for more. That's when it gets tough for the losing team, they have to go and make goals, but have a great chance of taking even more.
But from what I have seen (not only in this WC), that theory is probably right (considering two balanced teams of course).

It all depends, if you score and then sit back and don't continue to play any offense, then yeah you're probably going to lose. It is a game where there isn't a lot of scoring, but you don't want to try and maintain a 1-0 lead, because all the other team has to do is score once and their back in the game. Take Japan v. Brazil, they had that goal and they were celebrating and excited and everyone thought maybe there was this glimmer of hope for them and then it was like their attack fell apart. Brazil was allowed to gain momentum, control the pace of the game, and play their own game, which got them the easy victory.

Spains defence is not strong enough. In that match we see france getting few chances with no one following them to goal.
Goal will always give the side a positive point. So, getting a goal first, team needs to defend it well.

It's usually who scores first wins the match. Except for Spain.

In such a low-scoring sport, being up 1-0 at any point is a huge advantage in my opinion.
