I am a nutritionist,

a preganat women needs 300 extra calories in her diet during the second and third trimesters (there is no change during the first trimester). the composition of the diet does not change from a nonpregnant diet. you should still be eating 40% protein, 60% carb and 30% or less of fat.

protein is needed for the structure off all new cells in both the mother and the fetus. an increase of 10g of protein per day is recommended to provide for increased maternal blood volume, the development of the placenta, breasts, uterus, and uterine muscles, and for the development and growth of all fetal structures.

for a women weighing 62kg (136lbs) this means 60g of protein a day total most women in the US get much more than that even before thay are pregnant.

Dr. Robert Bradley and Dr. Brewer believe that a lack of protein in the diet can cause toxemia. If you are a vegetarian, you can get enough protein from beans and nuts.
