Hairspray (musical) is based on a John Waters movie Hairspray. He made the movie in 1988. Generally the Broadway inspires Hollywood there many-many Broadway shows based on movie flicks. (Like the Lion King and the Titanic.) So Hairspray is one of these special cases- the movie is followed by the show.

The new movie hasn't been filmed yet. They are still casting. It will probably be out sometime next year. So far they have John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, and Nicole Blonsky as Tracy. This movie is based on the Broadway musical, which was originally based on the 1988 movie "Hairspray", which starred Ricki Lake as Tracy. The new movie will be more like the Broadway show!

How is it that people don't have the time to type out complete sentences?
Do you mean, "When will Hairspray the movie be here?" ?
If so, then it is already here. You can get it on video/DVD starring Divine and Rikki Lake.
Of course for some strange reason, they made a theatre production based on the movie, and now they are making a movie based on the theatre production. I don't know when that movie will come out. You would think they would have learned their lesson after "the Producers" bombed in the movies.

I LOVE the movie Hairspray and I haven't seen the musical yet, but I didn't know they were coming out with a new movie version. That doesn't make sense! That movie isn't very old it was made in the late 80s.
