The things that I appreciated the most were the gifts that people made themselves, like blankets or personalized decorations for the baby's room. Or, if you don't have the time, training or inclination to make something - you can always personalize a store bought gift with your own little touches. Like buying the diaper bag they've registered for, but filling it with powder, wipes, receiving blankets, undershirts, rash ointment, baby hair brush & manicure sets & let's not forget Infant Tyelnol & Mylecon drops for gas. Those are all the "little" things that most people seem to forget every mom needs in her diaper bag - especially the last 2.
As far as a theme goes for the shower, most mothers-to-be, whether they know the sex of the baby or not, usually pick a them for the baby's room, so you can use that. If not, a generic "Welcome Baby" theme is always fine. When it comes to gifts, the stuff I mentioned earlier is all great when you don't know the sex & for clothes - stick with white, yellow & pale green. ALL babies can wear those colors.

The most appreciated gift I received for my baby shower was a huge bottle of Dreft detergent and a few cases of Pampers (from my sister). Cute little outfits, baby albums, stuffed animals and all that stuff is nice, and very thoughtful, but honestly...I appreciated the items that were useful moreso than the ones that were cute. I didn't have time to work on an album at first, my first son was a large baby, so a good deal of the cute little outfits didn't fit him, and he was too young to play with stuffed animals. However, I was constantly (and still am, actually!) doing laundry and changing diapers.
I knew the sex of both of my kids (both boys) so when my first son was born, we didn't do a "theme" per se...we just painted the room a soft blue with white trim. If you're unsure of the sex of the baby, I'd suggest off white, white or yellow. The good thing about neutral colors is that your baby won't be a baby forever, and if you have white walls, they're much easier to decorate when the baby becomes a toddler and falls in love with Bob the Builder, Winnie the Pooh, etc. :) We did buy our firstborn the John Lennon Real Love theme bedding, lamp, etc., but as for the walls...just blue.

1: Everything appreciated especially the big stuff on the registry. If there was one thing I got that I didn't like or need it was the amount of baby lotion i got. My daughter is 2.5 and i still have baby lotion left over. If you buy diapers buy them in lots of sizes and don't buy newborn size because most babies don't wear them for more than a week or so. Same thing goes for clothes. People forget that the baby is going to grow and leave the parents with nothing to dress the poor child in after a few months. So if you get clothes get an outfit in 3-6mo and 6-9mo and 9-12mo
2: We did "whirley gig" from babies r us for our theme because we weren't 100% on what we were having until the last minute. It was cute little cartoon bugs with lots of soft colors. It was very cute without being overly masculine or femine. Teddy bears are always a good choice as are plain primary colors.

books like nursery rhymes and unisex clolurs like green, white and yellow work for clothing and bedding. I didn't know the sex of my baby until he was born so I just decided to go with teddy bears, animals and underwater. I have used all 3 at different times over the last 20 months. I don't want a pink nursery if my next baby is a girl so I will probably go with teddy bears again.
Oh another good shower gift is gift cards, or a small coin collection. I live in Canada so my family has been buying collector coins for my son to build a collection as both myself and my mom have been collecting them as well. He gets usually the commemorative quarters that come out each year and get them for his birthday and Christmas.
Also a record book for baby's first year or music cd's like lulabies are also a nice idea.
I also liked getting diapers, wipes and once they knew the brand, formula because I was bottle feeding. Clothes are nice if you get enough different sizes. People bought mostly 012 for my son who was 2 months almost by his first Christmas, we didn't have a baby shower because plans fell through for a location a few times and dates. I have sleepers, socks and other things that he either wore once or never got a chance to wear. My son was wearing 12 months at 8 months old beginning last summer, by the end of the summer he was in 24 months comfortably so everything that was bought for 12 months to fit the following winter didn't fit after 6-8 months and was of no use to us except for regifting to my nephew. He is 6 weeks younger than my son and wears a 18 month right now, maybe 24 month by now, my son is in 3t shirts and 2t pants at 20 months. Also makes for A LOT of hand-me-downs for the baby we are trying to conceive now.

1. It depends if it is Mom's first baby or not. If it's her first than she will probably need everything. If it's her second or third, or more than money, diapers, and anything that gets used up is good. Also, I sure mom would appreciate something for her, like a Mom-to-be massage, or a gift certificate to her favorite book store.
2. Neutral colors, like beige, greens, yellows, whites, tans are good. If you pick a theme, don't make it too babyish other wise your child will want you to redecorate in 5 years.

The best gift for me was onesies and diapers/wipes. I couldn't get enough of them. If you don't know the sex you can decorate in all colors (just in case) or stick with white, yellow and green. I make diaper cakes and if I don't know the sex of the baby, I stick with those colors and that makes it ok either way.

2. anything babylike will do. the baby's not gonna be able to see most of the decoration until it's about 6-9 months old anyways. go for greens cuz they are soothing. babies like to see faces, concentric rings (i know it's weird but they like it). if u r getting a mobile to hand above the crib so that the baby has something to do, look for something in red and black-those r the colors that little babies see best.

1. Something off of her registry...or better yet a gift certificate.
2. Animals, blue, yellow, lime green. I had a girl and new it was a girl but was so sick of pink and flowers and things. I went with Noah's Arc and jungle theme...main color is lime green and I love it. All of her clothes are PINK!!!!!!!!! eeeek
