Loaded Question for sure. Yes Diamond wrote some great songs, not just for himself but for others (including the Monkees).

But is he the greatest - well - how about McCartney/Lennon, Burt Bacharach/Hal David - Paul Simon - Bruce Springstein - Smokey Robinson - Kurt Cobain - Mick Jagger/Keith Richards - Prince - Michael Jackson - Dozier/Lamont (who wrote tons of Motown hits) - Stevie Wonder - Ulrich/Hatfield (from Metallica) - Carole King/Gerry Goffen - Henley/Frey - Ray Charles - Bob Dylan - Babyface?

My point is there are so many great songwriters (and I've left out a very large number (forgot Zeppelin!) - so its hard to say who'se number one. But I have no problem putting Neil Diamond in with this group.
Oh - I assume you mean rock/pop/R&B - Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin - and many other great, great writers wrote songs before Rock and Roll

For me, Carole King is the best singer/songwriter she has written so many classic songs that people don't recognize as hers because they were covered by other artists like Aretha Franklin and James Taylor. I also love that she can play her own instruments, she's an amazing pianist and I belive she plays the guitar too.

Smiddy finds Weird Al's interpretations of lesser songs to be pure genius!!

"Eat It", "Fat", "Another One Rides The Bus", "My Bologna", "Stop Draggin' My Car Around", "I Lost On Jeopardy", "I Want A New Duck", "Girls Just Want To Have Lunch", "Like A Surgeon"

Nobody beats masterpieces like this! Nobody!
