It was a gradual process due to several factors.
1. bad emperors
2. increasing civilization of the people of the empire (which means weaker soldiers)
3. Roman disunity, endless infighting
4. economic decline
5. plagues
6. mass migration
7. and the settlement of the Visigoths in Moesia

The end of the Roman Empire is traditionally, if not strictly accurately, placed at 4 September AD 476, when the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire, Romulus Augustus, was deposed and not replaced. However, Diocletian, who retired in AD 305, was the last sole Emperor of an undivided Empire whose capital was the City of Rome. After the division of the Empire by Diocletian into East and West, each branch continued to style itself as "The Roman Empire." The Western Roman Empire declined and fell apart (see Decline of the Roman Empire) in the course of the 5th century. The Eastern Roman Empire (which would later adopt Greek as its main language), known largely today as the Byzantine Empire, preserved Greco-Roman legal and cultural traditions along with Hellenic and Orthodox Christian elements for another millennium, until its eventual collapse at the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1453.

I like to describe the fall of the Roman Empire more as a 'crumbling' rather than an all-out collapse. Even after the last Roman Emperor, people were still living with Roman Law, using Roman roads, and following Roman (Christian) religion. A person living in what is now southern France in 604 CE would probably not have any idea that he wasn't living in the Roman Empire any more. As far as he knew, nothing had really changed.

Overextrension of its territory, weak succesion to the Throne of Emperor, decadent living, the power and inspiration of Christianity, the military power of the Barbaric Tribes of Europe are some of the major reasons for the Decline and eventual Fall of The Empire by the beginning of the sixth century. The vacuum created by the collapse was soon filled by the Catholic Church and the Papacy. The Eastern Empire survived for another thousand years- fell in 1453 when Constantinople was captured by Mehmet the Great of the Ottoman Turks, and Constantine Paleologus X11 was killed.

From the inside, corrupt government, over indulgence by the rich and to much power over the poor. For enjoyment fed the poor and needy to lions for entertainment. In between gladiator fights cut mens throats to keep the excitement in the crowd.
Finally the poor got tired of it and got together and overthrew the government of rich, monsters. And fed them to the lions.
Every society has fallen that way. You get a rich class that hold the poor in very little esteem and they get together and over thow the government. Because in this country the poor have the opportunity to go to school and college and make a decent living it has kept that from happening. Some who became rich by hard work and inganuity has contributed to help as long as that is the case things go well people see a way out of poverty. Such as Bill Gates and others like him. Henry Ford is another wonderful example he said: "I want the people who work for me to make enough money to be able to afford a car." When we lose that giving spirit. We decline

it did not happen overight . just as it was not built in a day, the roman empire gradually collapsed as the ruling class got too rich and lazy . there were no more wars to be fought . there wwere too many orgies and debauchery in the last days. wine and lead poisoning from the amphora it was kept in resulted in mental decay of the ruling class.
