She clearly has emotional problems. However, wouldn't people complain if a father removed the mother of his five children and brought in a stranger to care for them? Some would argue that was "wrong." What if the father quit his job to stay home to help with the children? People would complain he was not "providing" for his family financially. Plus, how was he supposed to know things were that bad? I'm sure she did not tell him she would kill the children. Doesn't society force us to pretend that everything is okay all the time and anyone who asks for help or seeks guidance is considered "wrong" and "bad" and many other negative things? Doesn't that attitude force people into hiding their fears and anxieties until they explode? I'm not suggesting any of this justifies her behavior. It doesn't. However, hindsight is always 20/20 and it's easy to second-guess how things should have been handled.
Edited to add: I live in one of the lowest crime rate areas in my state. One of our neighbors begged for help for over six months and was told to "just do your best." She killed her three children. I did not know her or I would have helped personally. The point is people think it's as simple as picking up a phone and getting help. It's not. These women are home alone, tired, frustrated, etc. Sometimes, all it takes is a phone call, a card in the mail, dropping by with ice cream, something to let our family and friends know we care. Andrea Yates will disappear from everyone minds, but what about the next time? How many does it take before we stop and pay attention to those around us who need just a little encouragement?

It's called post partum depression and she is not the first nor will she be the last to have this problem. Having a baby is difficult on a woman. Physically and mentally. Some woman get mildly depressed some get severely depressed.
She had 5? babies in 6 yrs. What was her husband thinking?? She had already had a bad bout of pp depression after her 4rd child and was under a doctors care. The doctor told them not to have anymore children at least for awhile. I guess that her husband, being such a Christian, believed in keeping her barefoot and pregnant. This footnote is for Sherman: Why don't you read facts and stop dispensing such fiction!!!!

She was clinically depressed from post-pregnancy hormone imbalances. Basically, she was crazy. This had been a problem for quite awhile and through previous pregnancies. And yes, I think the Dad shares responsibility in this. He knew she was sick since she was getting treatment. The depth of her psychosis had to be pretty obvious to those around her. The fact that he wasn't taking steps to protect the kids during this time was unconscionable. That being said, she should never go free, but I don't think she deserves the death penalty because of the extenuating circumstances.

I despise this women, not only did she take her childrens lives and a portion of her husbands that can never be replaced, she has the nerve to be fighting for her own life.
I hate to say this, but she should have just ended her own life, when she took theirs. Better yet, she should have just took her own life and left theirs.
She was worried about not being a good mother, why didn't she just take herself out of the equation and give those poor children a chance for a future.

When I think about her killing those boys, my heart aches. She must have had such severe depression that she couldn't help herself. The videos show that she was a good mother, so it must have been something that made her snap. She called her husband and said she had done something to the boys -- maybe she really, really needed attention. I can't understand it, but I feel extremely sorry for her and everyone involved. Andrea's problem is is the result of the lack of
respect for life that is growing in the world.
One million three hundred thousand fetus (latin) for
unborn child, are destroyed by abortion every year and a couple of states have passed laws
to allow people to ask doctors to help them commit suicide. These things devalue life, People in Scotland have aborted their babies
when in late months of pregnancy they find
out that the baby has a cleft pallet or other correctable problem. If it is not perfect kill it.
Andrea was not happy with her children so
in a sense she got rid of them because to her
they were not perfect.

You answered your own question.
Andrea Yates' problem was Rusty Yates. He insisted that she homeschool those children, gave her only 2 hours a week of time to take care of herself, and knocked her up again after the doctors told him in no uncertain terms that she was mentally unstable and that another pregnancy might mess her up for good.

She was really unstable and her husband didn't care. He is just as much to blame for those kids death as she is. She needed to be on medication and birth control pills. A couple of those kids should have been in school instead of being schooled at home.

Clearly she has a history of severe mental problems that were not being treated properly. She was involved with cult like activity and was brainwashed, on top of social and mental issues. Read the link below for more information.
