Does the bank that the check is drawn on have a branch near you? If so, as long as there is money in the account, the bank will cash it for you on the spot- even if you don't have an account with that bank.

First Identify yourself to the place you go to cash the check. Second be sure it's a bank so they can call the other bank and verify that funds are in the account upon which your check was written than they should be willing to cash it. Of course you can expect to have them deduct $15-25 dollars in fees for the service provided but you may/might be able to get your cash. There's a good chance that despite your efforts you're out of luck, but try it and see.

There are places that will cash checks, but they still will need some kind of ID, like a driver's license or something in case the check doesn't clear. They will also charge a good percentage of the check for a fee.

Generally the banks would like to keep it for a week or two just to make sure
1) it's not fake
2) the money is there on issuer's account
