Myself, first you have to admit that you made a mistake and not blame it on anyone else. Then, you tell whoever the mistake will effect the most.

I will tell a stranger, because 1.) they don't know you 2.) you probably would never see them again 3.) they will not judge you, in fact they will give you the best advice because they are on the outside looking in.
