Go to
dell.com, but not until the end of July first part of August when they start running deals for back-to-school. Now is probably not a good time to be looking, I would wait another month.

best time of the year would probly be christmas, because everyone is asking their parents 4 a new comp. Buy a computer with at least 1 gb (1024 mb) ram if u want it to be fast. I do recomend dell. If u want to burn dvds (movies mostly) then u have to have the dvd burner drive, which also burns cds. If u get a cd burner drive it will read dvds too (at least modern ones do) but it will onlybe able to burn cds. Dell is a good brand. so I recomend them. U can check out gateway, thats another brand, or u can go to one of those sites where they take all the peices of the comp and reasemble them so it is cheaper 4 u. But yeah best time is in december.

First of all, I don't like Dell computers. I don't know what it is, but they're so cheap, and they look cheap! Like someone just put slabs of plastic together to make something. Ahh don't like them. I don't like Emachines either, I had one of those. Took it to the PC store like 3 times. I like HP computers. This one I bought here for around...$800 at Staples. I got everything with it, cpu, mouse, keyboard, 17" flat screen. And it came with a dvd writer and cd writer. I bought my own sony dvd double layer dvd burner for about....60-80 dollars. And i got like a $30 rebate. If I ever have any problems they have a thing where you can talk to an online technician, call them, or send them an e-mail. It's all for free to. Came in handy yestersday!
If money was no option and I could have any computer, Id definetely get an alienware. Look at some of their stuff www.alienware.com
Hope this helps, Good Luck!

First, stay away from Dell unless you enjoy long talks with underpaid folks in India, power supplies that die prematurely etc.
My first recommendation would be this at $550:
http://www.electracomp.com/product.php?productid=16248&cat=249&page=1
It's got a 17" LCD and a 16X DVD burner. We use Electra workstations for our Catia/Unigraphics 3D CAD seats and I can tell you these machine never crash and their customer support helping us get setup and such has been exceptional. I particularly enjoy getting a human directly when calling - seems like that's nearly impossible anywhere these days!
You won't be doing any real serious gaming at this price point but it'd make a great home office or just websurfing computer with some light gaming ability.

I don't know if you want a desktop or a laptop, but I assume you want a PC since you were looking at Dell. Here are some laptops in that price range. Acer Aspire 3003LCi, Dell Inspiron 1200, and the HP Compaq Presario M2000. You can find more info about them at the links below.

Go to newegg.com buy the parts and build one yourself.
You can build a REAL nice setup for about 500 or 600.
Especially if you use some of your old computer parts.
