Depending on the Op system - there are tools to clean up unwanted hard drive space, for programs or apps that are rarely used. This will only take out a fraction. The best way in an MS Op system is to go to "control panel", "add/remove programs" and manually select apps that you no longer need or are using. Then, manually delete files you do not want, namely large sized movies. Then empty the trash bin. Always remove the file and not just the short cut - which is what I beleive you are doing.

Try this Right Click hard drive in my computer and go to properties. Make sure Compress drive to save disk space is checked or from there do a disk clean up. Also delete unused programs or back up all your files to a back up hard drive that you have to buy and then delete the less urgent files from your main hard drive

2 things you can do..providing your running Windows XP
Go to Menu..then click on " Control Panel"..and find " System"..and click onto that..and then go to "System Restore"..and click onto that..and follow directions...itll take you back to the factory Installations..wipes your harddrive clean of everything youve done...like new!!!
and do this too...................
the first thing you can do is click on your Start menu..then select "All Programs" down at the bottom. From there..find "Accessories"..and click that. Next. go to "System Tools" and then go to " Disc defragmenter"..[remember to look above that and also notice "Disc Cleanup"..youll want to run that as soon as your done with defragging.] so..click onto the defrag..and click on "Analyze"....after thats done..click on "Defrag"..and wait till its done ...[and hour or more ]......then, do the " Disc Clean-Up thing.
If you just wanna make some more room on your HD tho..youve got to remove stuff that you dont care about..one click at a time...that way you can make room for those movies....AND..if you use the "Restore to an earlier time " button..located also in the "Accessories/System Tools section [look down]..you can take your computer back to the day after you downloaded that movie..and Itll be there...just dont do anything else ive mentioned ...

defragement will not run if 15% free left to harddrive
the olny thing that i suggest you is
compress only the program files on your system
do not compress the windows files
this will save same space but you still need a larger harddrive for movies

You can go here and learn:
http://www.internet4classrooms.com/clean.htm
You could also save those movies on a DVD and then delete them from your hard drive.
Or...you can get another hard drive.
