I would be very careful using ocean rocks in an aquarium. Certain rocks leech off their chemicals and minerals into the water, which can kill the fish, and you never know what might be on the rocks as far as chemicals. This is all especially true if you are setting up a fresh water aquarium.

I would have to agree with a few who have posted already and say "No."

There are different reasons for this:

1) The rocks from the ocean may contain various minerals and salts on them that can drastically alter the pH and water conditions in your tank. This would be disasterous if you were setting up a tank for SA tetras or such;

2) The ocean contains LOTS of critters, which contain LOTS of fungus, bacterias, and parasites. Now, in an open system like the ocean, these things are dealt with through the dynamics of the ocean's ecosystem. In your tank, they can erupt and ultimately destroy fishy life. These fungi, bacteria, and parasites could be living on those rocks, just ready to infect your tank.

3) Gravel can be bought in various "natural" looking forms... so there's no need to worry about sterilizing and treating your own rocks at home!

Its best to use gravel. Only use the rocks as decoration. However you must boil the rocks a few times in sea salt to clean them.Some fish will use the gravel to build a nest,it also helps with the bacteria that you need in the tank.

No, ocean rock are full of minerals no amount of cleaning can get out. This will send you pH as well as hardness sky high, as well as introducing many bad things. Just buy plain old aquarium rocks

Noooo....don't do that. It will kill your fish. The ph and chemicals in beach rock will not be ok for a freshwater tank.

Even with salt water tanks it can shock the tank and kill the fish. Get them from a pet store so you don't kill your fish.

you have no idea what is in those rocks, your fish could be sick or possibly die. get stuff from the store that was meant for them, not some foreign substance.
