First off check your cd drive if it does not say DVD on it then it doesnt play DVDs. Another reason could be that you dont always have to play it on windows media and real sometimes DVDs dont work there. Also u can go to a computer store suck as circuit city or bestbuy and but a DVD program. The reason it could be shutting down is either whats above or the Cd could be corrupting the drive because of where your trying to play it.

It isn't adaptable to the laptop then. Try using a normal dvd player,or a com that really plays dvd's. Good Luck.

Does your laptop have a DVD drive? If not, there is no way that it is going to play DVDs. It sounds as if it doesn't have a DVD drive to me. I believe that you can purchase a USB DVD drive although I am not sure of this. Check with Office Depot, Circuit City, or Staples.

Most likely it doesnt play read DVD's, CD ROM only, but as others have mentioned - there are several pieces of software that will allow it to read and write DVD's. Technically, it is an optical drive and simply needs the software to read and write a DVD protocol.
Also insure your drivers are up to date.

Check to see if you have memory, see if there is a new drive or a different drive. See if your DVD hardware is compatible with your laptop that's if you are using a external DVD.

Your disk drive doesn't support DVDs. If your laptop is old you should try to find a disk drive that plays DVDs but if it's new there is probably something wrong with it. Kind of like that hideous runon sentence I just made.

Do you mean the program or the computer shut down? If u have tried all diff kinds of players, that is good troubleshooting. Now you can blame it on the dvd drive itself, or you can blame it on a virus of somesorttelling ur comp to shutdown every time u insert a cd. (hey i should make that, lol) Try just a normal cd. If there is an error message with numbers give that next time.
