A good indicator will be either touching where it wasn't normal before (if he touches your arm or hugs you for longer or more often than before you started wondering), hints of jealousy or abject silence when talking about people you fancy and increased nervousness around you are all indicators. If you want to be mroe than friends you probably need to put it on the talbe that it's ok or if you don't try ignoring it or subtely discouraging it (do not riciprocate hugs or be a bit guarded or be more open and vocal about other people you like) and he should get the picture, sometimes it's a faze, it's happened with me a few times where you jsut realise how nice a person is when you're friends and you feel you have to make a go before you've known each other too long that it won't be an option. Hopefully though there won't be hard feelings if he realises that what he's got is all he's got.

Well, some of that could be typical best friend behavior, such as talking about anything. That's usually what best friends do. Does he flirt with you or with other girls? That part of your description is a bit unclear. You could ask him if he likes you, ask him out if you like him, or wait until he brings it up, which may never happen. As for me, when I was in that situation he told me straight out.

Does not sound confusing to me.
You either act on your suspicion or let it simmer indefinitely...waiting for your best friend to do something may take forever..at least it will feel that way.
Ask.
