This is the best answer I've heard:
The Aussies moaned after the call in the box that lead to the PK. Whether you agree with the call or not is immaterial.
After the PK was made, the Italian player wanted a way to say "you're a bunch of crybabies" to the Aussies...so he sucked his thumb.
It's not a whole lot different than the occasional NFL player who would acts like he's wiping his tears when a call goes against the other team.
