Usually the person has a compulsive personality. Studies have shown that people with addictions generally are like the monkey who pushed the button too many times, in the end, he dies. So it is with addictive personalities, whether it is alcohol, drugs, food, relationships, etc...these people just don't know when to say NO.

People often become addicted to things because they have an addictive personality. The more they think they NEED something in order to get by, the more addicted they will become.
It becomes a vicious cycle. It's not just food, cigarettes, clothes, money, sex, relationships, videogames, sports, drugs, the media or power. It's gambling as well to the point where a person is banned from all casino's in the area because they have an addiction, have given away all finanical means and they are litterly penniless.
I think (and by this I mean I am no expert) that in order to try and get rid of being addicted, one had to be aware that they have everything they need inside themselves without looking always to the external for answers.

They tend to get addicted to things in order to fill a void in their lives, or to help them cope with something that they were not raised to understand. Other times it can be an escape from real-world pressures. None of them are good excuses, but they are the main reasons addictions are formed.
What is confusing though is recognizing an addiction, not just in others, but in ourselves as well.
Addictions to sex, money, drugs, alcohol, cleanliness, social acceptance, love (or the feeling of being in love, even when they are not in love with you.)
Because my mom was an alcoholic when I was a young child, I have never allowed addictions to enter my life that I could not control.
I drank alcohol, smoked, loved, made love...but was able to walk away from any of it at any given point in time, without the cravings to return to it (excluding love and making love.)
The only addiction in my life that I refuse to give up is my addiction of being attracted to beautiful women.

Some people get addicted to things because they think that it is good and they just want more. Being addicted can be bad, but it can be good, too.

people get addicted to many things in just a "flash" they get addicted by having to much of something. that's why if they want to quiet for example smoking they would have to not smoke as many cigs a day and they would have to -1 everyday till there not so addicted anymore.

People use addictions as a crutch. They don't want to be responsible as society dictates and they don't want to accept responsibility for their actions so they use addiction as an excuse not to.
