The transmission was no good and it wouldn't run over 40/mph. So we got a used tranny put it in, but it's still not going over 50/mph. What could be the problem now? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

when we stop at a stop sign it takes a whilefor it to get goingand we replaced the thermostat yesterday because it started heating up when we turned on the air con( it actually didn't even have a thermostat)
so we put one in
the car eoesn't run over 50
and won't catch the 4th gear which brings us back to the tranny

Hard to diagnose with what sketchy info you've provided, but here's a few things to check:

1 ) Torque Converter
Was this replaced when the transmission was switched? Given what you describe, this would seem the more likely culprit (same problem with both trannies).

2 ) Vaccuum Lines
Another common troublemaker for automatic transmissions. A damaged line, missing cannister, or leaky system will prevent an automatic transmission from shifting, as well as interfere with the fuel delivery system. (double-whammy)

3 ) Compression Check
Get a simple compression tester (or have a garage do it, pretty cheap) to test the exact compression on each and every cylinder. In addition to finding actual compression problems, it can also help spot...

4 ) Sticking Valvetrain
What is barely noticeable at lower engine speeds can positively kill an engine at higher speeds (and not be otherwise noticeable). Badly-sticking valves are easily damaged (and easily spotted via the compression test), though this is usually a major job to repair.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but you kinda skimped over the pertinent details in your initial posting.

The one thing every one misses. Clogged catalytic converter or muffler. Try banging on both with a rubber mallet. If you hear noises inside replace it. Have a friend rev the engine up to 2500 rpm and put your hand near the exaust. It should be flowing freely at this speed. If it is not have the whole syaten checked at a muffler shop.

Could possibly be a plugged converter or exhaust system. Does the car idle smoothly and run ok at slower speeds ?
Low fuel pressure and/or plugged fuel filter will mimic a bad trans if it's fuel injected !

your pretty vague with problem but here are some of the checks I do: fuel pressure at affected speed, if weak (below 30psi for fuel injection 5psi carb) check filter, pump
Clogged exhaust( cat convertor) dissconnect exh. pipe from exhaust manifold, will; be loud but go for ride, if problem gone, then cat conv. clogged
scan for codes, sensor(s) can affect alot of things
you changed trans, is the used 1 slipping?

check your fuel filters If you got a Carbureted Fuel System check the inline filter if it has one. You can't always tell if plugged remove and try or install a new one. almost forgot check fuel pump pressure
