I don't know if you perhaps mean electron configuration. If so, they occupy main energy levels, sub levels (labelled s, p, d and f) orbitals and spins. See link: -

the valence elctions are the outermost electrons and therefore when u do a reaction or equation u only look at the valence electrons. They are the most significant. ( Lewis dot diagrams, etc.)
