I've noticed that when I do not let it warm up for at least 5-10 minutes, the transmission seems to have a hard time making into 3rd gear. Could the transmission problem be related to not warming the engine?

Diesels have what's called "glowplugs" that need to warm up before you drive the car, so yes...let it sit and warm up awhile before driving it.

warm it up until the need comes off the cold line, even if it's just barely above it u should be fine to drive it without shifting hard. I have a 2001 f-250 w/ 107,000 miles on it and it shifts pretty hard into 3rd gear, but my husband is a diesel mech. and said it should be fine, if it gets worse then take it to the shop. Happy truckin!

You have a trans. problem.Probably a dirty filter.Your 10 min. warm up is also warming the fluid in the trans. making it flow easier through the filter. The glow plugs,if it has them are for initial start up.Turning the key on should illuminate a lite in the dash indicating a glow plug.It warms the air inside the cylinder to ease initial start.Diesel engines combust fuel by heat compression, there are no "sparks"from glow or any other source.
