80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

Is there a meaning? Life is. What do you think it is supposed to be about? Is it helping other people? Having a kazillion kids? Taking care of the planet? Vandalism? War? Over-population, over-spending? Pollution? It could be any or none of those things. Life (for me) is about finding something that is meaningful, making a difference, fulfillment of the soul. It could be painting, singing (even if you can't carry a tune), gardening, enjoying the rain, or the summer heat. Life is about every day being your best, making someone smile or laugh or forget about their troubles if even for a second. Life is about all of it. You can't pin the meaning of life down to one thing, it is different for everyone, as you can see by the answers posted. The question really is "What is the meaning of MY life?" Only you can answer that. You may agree with some and disagree with others, but only you can decide. Some people believe the meaning of life is chocolate, or beer, or even a fabulous cup of coffee. And during that moment of enjoyment it is. Relish your life, celebrate every day, bask in the glory of being alive! The alternative isn't much fun and yet oddly, it is part of the meaning of life as well, someday.
ciao!

There is a whole lot of life on this planet- you need to be specific, but...

All life on earth has a function integral with the survival of the biosphere- the trees, taken as a whole for example, provide for such things as creating oxygen; so ergo, life is about transformation of certain substances into other substances...google the earth worm to discover what just one species does to keep us all going.

As for "humanity": we too have a function, taken as a whole which serves the biosphere through transformation of substances etc- science has not thought about this very much as it is an afront to the view we have of ourselves as something "apart" from the biosphere- and we can see what damage this has done.

As for the individual- the oldest and most consistent "meaning" is that we are here to create a "soul" or some "higher body" through which we are able upon physical death of travelling beyond the confines of earth and out into the "great ocean"- how we do this is another question.
