Weight machines are better than nothing. Use your own body weight, too. Push-ups and pull-ups and one-legged squats are some of the best exercises you can do!

Any weights can help you bulk up but you need a good diet and good traning on the machines before you begin. Have a work with your local gym instructor he/she will give you some advice

Good technique can only be gained using the free weights. Not only do you need to lift the weights you must balance, concentrate etc so you do not fall or even hurt yourself. Machines steady everything for you, not to say they do not do you any good.

Free weights are better because they make you use more control when you use them. When you use machine's you use momentum and don't get the full benefits.
As for exercises to do ... Take the machine's you use and replicate the movement's. You will get more for your buck by using free weights.

everything you have heard is true. While free weight help to strengthen indevidual musscle strands and weight machines help to build physique. One thing to remember is that you dont build musscle from lifting soft weights all the time, nor from lifting heavy weights all the time. Mix it up and be safe.

You don't need lots of free weights if your gym has one of those big balls. You can exercise every single muscle and it works quicker too as the exercises cause many more muscles to fire during each repetition as you have to stabilize yourself as well as do the actual exercise. You can really feel them so it's not for wusses!
