I was born and raised in the SF Bay Area and have been contemplating a trip back "home". So I am a littel partial to Northern California. I like both the California's, they are very different from one another and both have a lot to offer. SF has the whart, Ghirrardeli Square, Marin County, Alcatraz all the touristy thing and a short trip across the bridge you've got beuatiful Alameda, Berekley. Wine country, Sacramento, Tahoe. It really depends on your interest, but NoCal has several great spots.
I'm not as familiar with SoCal as I lived there for a couple of years (out in the desert). Palm Springs and the surrounding areas are cool, Joshua Tree Monument, Of course there's all that LA has to offer. San Diego and Coronado are definitely must see's. And just a ashort drive away yo can be in Vegas, Mexico, etc.

I really like Lake Tahoe which it shares with Nevada. I loooooooooove the Monterey peninsula especially during August when it becomes the automobile enthusiasts' capital of the world. On the same weekend they have the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance (a show of million dollar antique cars), the Monterey Historical Automobile Races at the legendary Laguna Seca speedway, the Concorso Italiano (an auto show of Italian exotic cars) and many megabuck car auctions.
I like Pasadena because I have relatives there.
But my absolute favorite place in California is the Pacific Coast Highway or California Route 1. There's nothing in the world like taking a long, relaxing, drive, top down in a convertible through that astoundingly beautiful scenic route. Wish I was there right now in my beloved old Miata. Ahhh! The simple things in life!

Love the area around Cambria, San Simeon, breath taken. Goes along the rugged Pacific coast Real eye candy. The aroma in the air, is of wild lavender, rosemary, grows everywhere. The food, mostly organic, wines are local. Just the kind of place, get up early, go for long walks, all day. Stop at the great shops, lunch at a local Bistro. Latter some wine, share conversation, about your day, discoveries. B n B's, Cambria Lodge is where I stay, fireplaces in the rooms. Does not get any better!

San Diego. A wonderful city. Magical, fun and just fine. Everybody should be able to see a sun set in La Jolla, see Mission Beach, and the Gas Lamp District.

In Long Beach area, hotel courtyard - for its cool atmosphere and location, a walk on the long beach high street for the happening place and the long walks on the bike road along the beach - being close to the seas and people at the same time!

I have only been to Cali twice but I really enjoyed the beauty of the wine country. It seems so removed from the craziness of L.A. I also liked the Sacramento area. It was very nice there too!

Anaheim. That's where Six Flags Magic Mountain is! San Diego has Sea World, too.

As a California native I might suggest Calaveras Big Trees Park - it will take your breath away! Don't forget your camera!
