World's Tallest Tower:
The Sears Tower lost the title of world's tallest building in 1996 to Kuala Lumpur's twin Petronas Towers. Current title-holder Taipei 101 (Taiwan) is 1,670 feet tall, but it will be eclipsed by the Burj Dubai Tower (United Arab Emirates) that may reach 2,300 feet.

The Fordham Spire will be a twisting 115-story glass and concrete tower that would be the United States' tallest building on Chicago's lakefront. Critics compared the proposed 2,000-foot (610 meter) Fordham Spire to a giant candle fit for a cake, while others said it was out of place in a post-Sept. 11 world in which landmark skyscrapers could be terrorist targets. (Almost 1,000 feet taller than the former WTC Twin Towers.)

The Fordham Spire, which would house condominiums and a hotel, is the brainchild of Christopher Carley, chairman of Chicago-based Fordham Co. It was designed by award-winning Spanish-born architect Santiago Calatrava, who is known for his curvaceous bridges, the winged addition to Milwaukee's art museum and the transportation center to be built at New York's Ground Zero. Chicago was America's birthplace for modern architecture, nurturing the genius of Louis Sullivan, Daniel Burnham, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe. Carley said in a statement, "We want to carry that tradition into the 21st century and give our city a masterpiece by one of today's indisputable geniuses."

The slender tower will soar 1,458 feet to its roof and then add a spire to reach 2,000 feet, topping the 1,450-foot-tall (442 meter) Sears Tower, currently the nation's tallest, and New York's proposed 1,776-foot-tall (541 meter) Freedom Tower. It will take up only 14,000 sf at its base and contain just 920,000 sf -- compared to 4.5 million sf in the Sears Tower.

Developer Donald Trump scaled down his self-named Chicago hotel-condominium tower, under construction a few blocks from the proposed tower's site near the mouth of the Chicago River.

The Burj Dubai, scheduled for completion in 2008 – in Dubai.
The Saudi Binladin Group, the biggest developer in the kingdom, begun by Osama bin Laden's father, is in the running for the project.

The skyscraper will be nearly half a mile and about one-third taller than the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. It will include a hotel wing, apartments, offices, entertainment centers and restaurants.

The project also includes one of the world's largest malls – the Dubai Mall with over 2 million square feet of retail space – and a mock "old town," making it "a city within a city."

Record-obsessed Dubai is already home to the world's largest man-made island, the Palm Jumeirah, and the world's first seven-star hotel, the Burj Al-Arab.

The Binladin group built its considerable fortune by carrying out many projects for the royal family in Saudi Arabia – including the the expansion of the two holy mosques in Mecca and Medina.

Construction of the Burj Dubai project has already started, with excavation of the site completed recently.

Sales of residential units in the tower will start soon, said an official with Emaar Properties.
