AMERICAN GOLDFINCH The yellow body, black cap and wings mark the American Goldfinch (4-1/4"). In flight it is recognized by it roller-coaster flight and its clear song. It is a bird of weedy fields and meadows, feeding near the ground, and nesting in young trees. Female, young, and winter males are dull yellow-brown, with wing bars but no black on the head. The western Lesser Goldfinch (3-3/4") is similar, with black crown, but dark (green or black) back and duller yellow breast. Sunflower or thistle seeds will attract goldfinches to feeding stations.

It's a male American goldfinch, also known as a wild canary. They're crazy for the thistle seed this time of year.
