Prince is a perfect example of why genre distinctions are unnecessary and counter-productive. He generally works in the pop field, but a lot of his songs have a clear rock foundation. He's also worked a lot in funk, R&B, rap, jazz and avant-garde. You can hear influences from gospel, Arabic music, folk, classical, blues and new wave in his music. I'm sure I'm even missing some genres.

Prince is completely uncategorisable. He is a genre unto himself! That's what makes him so brilliant.

He sings?

Heh, just kidding.

Rock is probably the best description. He is not Rap, or wasn't last time I listened to him.

For those about to Rock, we salute you!
