A client ftp would be the actual software you use to upload or download to the ftp server. The ftp server would actually be the host of the files that your are downloading, sort of like storage. Yes two clients can exchange files via ftp. This is similiar to the file tranfer function in yahoo messenger. I cant confirm if that uses ftp though more than likely its just a direct connection.

For storage. An FTP server is strictly for storing files on a website. FTP clients exchange by maintaining and acquiring files from the server that is why a server is important to have. The exchange is done by the server itself not the client!

server ftp will give the connection to client as they need.only file transfer from server to client but not at the other way...
