Snails have a hard scraping tongue called the radula. It is adapted so the the snail can eat almost anything. Mostly they eat plant material. They scrape away the plant tissue using the radula and swallow the liquid like scrapings.

"Snails are found in freshwater, marine, and terrestrial environments. Most are of herbivorous nature, though a few land species and many marine species may be omnivores or carnivores."

Assuming your daughter has found a snail and is intending to keep it as a pet, I'd take my cue from what environment in came from. Generally, though, judging from what Wikipedia said above, if she found it in the back yard, you'd probably be pretty safe with a few leaves from the plant it came off of.

depends on the snail.. if your talking about a freshwater snail in a fish tank.. then it eats algae and junk on the floor of the fishtank. If you mean a garden variety snail.. then it eats plants and leaves and stuff found in a garden.
Snails are related to slugs.. which eat the same thing in the garden. Hope this helps :)

The regular kind of snail that is found in people's yards and gardens eat vegetation and from my own personal experience, earthworms. I went outside one night and there, on top of a rock, was a snail eating an earthworm. I hope this helps.
