According to J.K. Rowling there will only be 7 Harry Potter books. She is currently working on the 7th, and it is expected some time in 2007. The name has not been released, and probably won't be until close to the time for the book to be published.

I read an article (just today, but in Bulgarian) that there is going to be _only one_ more Harry Potter book - in which two of the main characters will die. Also, it said that Rowling wrote the final scene back in 1990...
Half-blood prince is the last one published so far. I think the next one will be in the beginning of 2007.

There will only be 7 books, and she's currently working on #7. The books, in order are,
1. HP & the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone
2. HP & the Chamber of Secrets
3. HP & the Prisoner of Azkaban
4. HP & the Goblet of Fire
5. HP & the Order of the Phoenix
and
6. HP & the Half Blood Prince

Actually there are 7 books in total. She finished the 7th book way back in 1990. She is actually in the process of editing the book. She has even hinted of killing potter and another person in the final book, it was out in the morning papers.

Yes she will be writing two more books however, she doesn't want anybody to carry the story on at any point so in the last book Harry Potter gets killed!

Think your wrong about 8 books, only THINK though.
But sure she gave interview the other day saying that she was only going to write 7 books. The seventh is almost ready for sale, have you not seen in the news? 2 main characters are killed off.

she is writing book 7 at the moment (she said its going well but gave no hint at a publishing date) she hasnt released a title as far as i know but Harry Potter and the Lost Horcruxes is a big rumour going around
Book 7 will be the last and two big characters die at the hands o voldemort....

the next book will be the last in the HP series.
my guess is she'll publish the last one next july - they published the last one in midsummer last year.
apparently she's getting pretty close to the end *shiver* and there will be a lot of editing after the first draft is completed. just my guess. officially there is no word from the publisher.
