Half my pay check is gone before I even cash it...

I know that they have to take out but I don't agree with the amount and having my money shipped out to other countries to support their causes when they have their own gov't.And I know we have to help the elderly with s.s and medicare...but I 'm simply saying that it's somewhat high don't you think?

Large amounts are taken out of your paycheck for social security because that is where the Senate and House get their retirement from. Their pay stays the same on retirement and they will get more in one month than you get all year.

They take the money away now so they can give the money back to you (and then some) when you're old enough to receive it or poor enough to need it. It's called a "safety net" and it provides a number of secondary economic benefits: lowers pension burdens on employers, lowers medical costs for hospitals, lowers burdens (and consequently rates) for insurers, etc. etc. Safety nets offer a clearer picture of economic stability for the future, which helps people plan their future and invest long-term, which in turn has secondary benefits for the economy as a whole.

Some question the long-term health and viability of Social Security. But honestly, do you think the self-centered Yuppie generation is going to let a program like Social Security die before they get what they think is coming to them? Based on politics alone, I can pretty much guarantee that S.S. will be around for a minimum of another 30-40 years.

When Social Security was founded, over 50% of elderly Americans lived in poverty. Nowadays, that number is closer to 11%. I'd call that a mission accomplished. Just something to consider before bashing Social Security.

Because they need money to help the poor and the elderly
who can't help themselves. You may be one of those helpless
people some day. If the government hasn't spent it all on
something else, they will pay you enough to eek by. It's
called welfare. Same with the elderly when they can no longer
work but need medical care and can't pay it. They will get
Medicare fund so they can go to the doctor and have opeations.
You too will be old some day (that's the truth and don't you
forget it). So, now don't you feel better that some of your
paycheck goes to help out the needy?

Because the government thinks it's their job to take care of people who "can't take care of themselves." I wonder how in the world people survived without medicare/social security? How indeed? They must've just committed suicide when they reached retirement age.

An example of where my tax dollars are going: I was in the checkout aisle of the grocery store two weeks ago and there was a young girl in front of me, no more than about 18. She was unmarried and redeeming about $150 worth of welfare vouchers for baby formula and saying how glad she was she didn't have to pay for it while at the same time asking if the store was hiring because she needed a job as a cashier. How ecstatic I am that my tax dollars are going to support someone who didn't go out and get an education or vocational training so she could get a job that could support a family before she started one.

Congratulations! You are starting to think like a Republican. Why indeed? Most of those taxes wouldn't be necessary if the federal government let the states take care of their own matters.

Social Security and Medicare are federally legislated pyramid schemes. They worked great for those who got in early. For those who got in late...they're screwed...your money is gone.

That is to help the sick, lame and lazy. But mainly it's to help create a power base for the politicians. They keep millions of people under their thumb with the threat of denying them the "entitlement"

half...???? i doubt that....when you need a gov't agency...remember what you just complained about...

you could be riding on dirt roads to work...unsafe transportation....crime...warlords running different areas of the country...no water, power, public transportation, no disease control...no controls over food hygiene...

and then when you get old, no one to help you

yeah...its a pain in the butt...but do you have a better plan..??? do you want your neighbor to spend all their money and then you have to take care of them when they need it..???
