Actually I would not venture to do this as a home improvement self project. You can have Lowes, Sears, Home Depot or Champion windows measure and give you free estimates. I highly recommend Champion, a lifetime guarantee on eveything. They put them in , no matter how many in one day and clean up all their mess. All you are left with is the great windows.

if you can see the inner wall measure from the trim studs(2x4's on either side) & from the sill to the header, and subtract a 1/2" from both measurements . if you can't see past the sheet rock measure the distance inside the framework of the window.

It's by the outside of where you will be putting the screws to hold the window in place.

The oledude just above me has it right. Andersen has a pretty good guide on everything you wanted to know about windows but were afraid to ask, here: http://www.andersenwindows.com/ReplacementRemodeling/Windows101/Default.aspx
